Instagram Notifies Verified Users of Security Breach
Instagram on Wednesday sent security notices to all verified account holders, including PCMag, about a breach targeting "high-profile users."
The photograph and video-sharing app said it "recently discovered that 1 or more individuals obtained unlawful access to a number of high-contour Instagram users' contact information." The perpetrators exploited a bug in an Instagram API to gain access to user'due south email addresses and phone numbers. Fortunately, the hackers did not access whatsoever account passwords.
"Our main concern is for the safety of our community and, out of an affluence of caution, we are reaching out to all verified accounts," the company wrote. "At this point we believe this effort was targeted at high-contour users."
Instagram said it apace fixed the bug and is now investigating the incident.
The company advised verified users to "be extra vigilant" about the security of their accounts and be on the lookout for suspicious calls, texts, and emails. The Facebook-owned social media giant as well recommended users enable two-factor authentication and pick a strong password.
